Having been born in Long Beach and raised in Hawthorne, Russell Westbrook is a child of South Los Angeles, where a large part of the black community of the megalopolis is concentrated.
And on the occasion of “Black History Month” in the United States, the Clippers playmaker has just announced, on social networks, its investment in the “Evermont” project. This is a real estate project worth several tens of millions of dollars which must be completed in a few months, in order to breathe new life into a neighborhood.
This is because the project site, located at the corner of Vermont and Manchester avenues, burned down during the Los Angeles riots thirty years ago, and had since been abandoned. For the police, the place was known as “murder alley”, more than 60 dead having been found there…
“From abandonment to a symbol of rebirth, Evermont rewrites the history of South Los Angeles”says Russell Westbrook, with the project expected to provide 180 affordable housing units for seniors and low-income households, a Target store, a preparatory school and small businesses like the South LA Cafe.
An investment that makes ” proud “ the 2017 MVP, happy to help the inhabitants of his “city of birth”.
