Rip Hamilton has high hopes for the Cade Cunningham – Jaden Ivey duo

The best periods in the history of the Pistons always correspond to moments when the Michigan franchise was able to rely on a duo of very high level backs. These were Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars in the late 1980s and early 1990s, then Chauncey Billups and Rip Hamilton in the mid-2000s.

Each time, the Pistons made the Finals and won titles. In 1989 and 1990 first (after lost Finals in 1988), then in 2004, before a defeat against Spurs in 2005.

Can we hope to see this pattern again with Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey? For Rip Hamilton, it seems possible.

“When we arrived here with Chauncey, we looked at what Dumars and Thomas had achieved, and we wanted to do the same to show them that we carried their heritage with us,” says the former rear at Michigan Live. “Because wearing this jersey was everything for them. If we look at the history of the Pistons, they have always had great outside players, great leaders at this position. I think Cade and Ivey are going to get ready for that, to put on that costume. »

This duo has so far been seen too little on the courts. In 2022/23, Jaden Ivey certainly had an interesting end to the season, but Cade Cunningham only played twelve matches, due to a shin injury.

“He will come back in good health and that’s good news,” continues the 2004 NBA champion. “Now that he’s healthy, the league, the city of Detroit and Pistons fans will see a new Cade. I’m happy for him, he will be able to lead this team. »

The first choice of the 2021 Draft has apparently returned to an excellent level since he impressed this summer, during Team USA training camp. In any case, his teammate is rave. “I think many will be surprised by what he will bring”, announces Jaden Ivey. “He is going to have a special season. »
