Retaining Nikola Vucevic was the Bulls’ summer priority

After this disappointing 2022/23 season and Lonzo Ball’s physical problems, you’d think the Bulls were going to blow up their squad. It is the opposite that has happened, Chicago betting on the contrary on continuity by extending Nikola Vucevic in particular via a new contract of 60 million dollars over three years.

“I am enthusiastic about Vooch” explains GM Marc Eversley at NBC Sports Chicago. “There aren’t that many starting pivots in the NBA. And so if we let Vooch go, who could we replace him with? We didn’t like these options. Keeping it has therefore become the priority of our off-season. »

The Bulls therefore hope to bounce back with the same group, around Nikola Vucevic, DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine.

See the positive

Especially since they also extended Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu, containing small adjustments, notably by signing Jevon Carter and Torrey Craig to complete the rotation.

Marc Eversley is thus also satisfied to have kept Coby White, via a contract of 36 million dollars over three years, the bonuses being able to allow the playmaker to touch up to 40 million dollars.

“Coby White has had an exceptional year” even assures the leader. “He has progressed over the last three years like no one else in the team. Especially on his shot, and he’s much more comfortable now with his dribbling. He is no longer under pressure and no longer panics. He found his voice in the locker room. He became a quiet leader. We have seen it grow and evolve. That’s why it was essential to keep it. »

As for Ayo Dosunmu, extended for 21 million dollars over three years, it’s time to rebound.

“He won’t contradict me, he didn’t have the second year he thought he had”concludes Marc Eversley. “We can speak of a sophomore fall. But we saw him at the Advocate Center and we saw how hard he worked from the end of the season until today, and there are only good things that are going to happen to him. »
