The summer soap opera starts again in Boston. After his time in Spain with the players’ union, of which he is one of the vice-presidents, Jaylen Brown returned to Boston, where he will therefore be able to resume negotiations around his contract extension. Remember that he is eligible for the biggest contract in history, which could reach 304 million dollars over five years, with a final season at 70 million dollars!
However, despite the displayed optimism of Brad Stevens, the fact that nothing has yet been finalized after more than three weeks of talks between the two camps is questionable…
It’s that as the Boston Globe noteseveryone is trying to cover their backs, with a long-term perspective.
For Boston, it is thus a question of keeping as much control as possible on Jaylen Brown’s contract by probably offering him the maximum but without too many options, in order to keep some flexibility in the new collective agreement, which will penalize overspending teams and could lead the club to restructure its workforce along the way.
In the player’s camp, we are well aware of this, especially with the extension of Kristaps Porzingis. If Boston does not win the title by the summer of 2025, the club could thus be led to upset its “roster” and Jaylen Brown could then well be the main adjustment variable…
A scenario that Jaylen Brown and his advisers are obviously trying to limit by demanding leverage (“player option” in the last year, “trade kicker”…) that the Celtics would no doubt like to avoid.
