Raptors would have preferred to retire Kyle Lowry's jersey first

For their 30th anniversary, the Raptors surprised everyone by retiring the number 15 of Vince Carter on November 2, on the occasion of the reception of the Kings of DeMar DeRozan.

Enough to organize a great party at the Scotiabank Arena, while cutting the grass under the feet of the Nets, who will retire the #15 jersey of the (future) Hall of Famer in January.

Yet, as Josh Lewenberg detailsAccording to TSN, there was a lot of reluctance among Raptors officials to make Vince Carter the first player to have his jersey retired by the club. Many were hoping that the honor would go to Kyle Lowry, the leader of the club's best era, which included the 2019 title.

Problem: At 38, the point guard still has no intention of leaving the court, and Vince Carter's upcoming induction into the Hall of Fame, which coincided with the team's 30th anniversary, was a hard opportunity to miss. Especially since the Nets had announced their intention to retire “Vinsanity's” jersey…

It's also that the resentment against Vince Carter has largely faded in Canada, as his departure left a lot of bitterness among fans, even though he was the player who put the Raptors on the NBA map.
