Last weekend, in football, Galatasaray beat Fenerbahce 3-1. A score that did not escape Ergin Ataman since he took advantage of a large victory of his Panathinaikos, in a preparation match, against Galatasaray, to underline it. With a gesture of the hands, a 3 and a 1 with the fingers, towards the stands.
Even though he explained that he did not want to offend anyone, Fenerbahce did not appreciate this provocation. Not at all. The proof with a press release and a strong decision: no more players from their club will go to the national team! The latter being led by Ergin Ataman.
A lack of respect
“The character, behavior and mission of this individual, based on his past actions and attitudes, are now evident. What he did in front of millions of viewers is in total opposition to the dignity and identity of the position of national team coach,” can we read. “The national team belongs to each of us. Every individual who is part of this team must act with this awareness and responsibility.”
Thus, the Turkish club considers that this gesture is “a lack of respect […] towards the dignity of the position of head coach of the national team, and even towards our country”and has not “taken into account the apologies he made”.
In conclusion of the press release, Fenerbahce announces that “As long as this person, who has exceeded his rights, holds this position – which requires essential qualities such as “dignity” and “neutrality” – we have decided not to send players from our club to the senior men's national team”.
During the last qualifying window for Eurobasket 2025 (two matches last February), Ergin Ataman called up three Fenerbahce players: Sertac Sanli, Tarik Biberovic and Melih Mahmutoglu.
