Extended at full price last summer, Jordan Poole is not ready to forget this season… Considered the star of the future of the Warriors, the young back has lived through the worst with an attack from Draymond Green in training, a half-hearted season, and even catastrophic playoffs .
The numbers are terrible for last season’s revelation. Against the Kings, he signed 12 points at 34% on shots, including 26% from 3-pointers, and against the Lakers, it was worse: 8.3 points at 35% on shots, including 25% from 3-pointers. We have never found the Poole of last season, a formidable offensive joker, capable of taking over from Stephen Curry in attack. How can such a drop in performance be explained?
Learn to play for others
“It’s probably due to a change of role. Last year I could come on and score, be aggressive with the team we had around us. Today, I am more of a facilitator” does he think. “I tried to find them open shots. Throughout the playoffs we played against two very good defenses, and I tried to find ways to make it easier, to get inside. It’s not always about scoring. It’s about finding ways to help our team succeed. You know, I think every playoff series is different. Nothing will be the same. »
For Poole, whose new contract begins in September, this 4th season is a blessing in disguise, and he keeps only the best. At no time does he mention his problems in defense, or the impact of Draymond Green’s attack.
“It’s exciting to say that I played my 4th season with these players… I learned a lot. I have grown a lot. I had some exciting moments throughout the season. I participated in my second playoffs. It was a good season” he assures. “Obviously we wanted to go further and keep fighting for the title, but you know, the cards don’t always fall on the right side. But there was a lot to learn and a lot to remember. »
Adapting to reviews, social networks…
In particular, he learned that it was necessary to keep a course, and not to take into account criticisms and comments. And he takes the example of Jayson Tatum in his recent Game 6 against the Sixers.
“What people are saying today, whether it’s on social media, Instagram, Twitter or whatever, is the same people who were saying the same things 20 years ago. They simply had no outlet. They didn’t have the opportunity; they were content to read the newspapers or listen to the radio” Poole recalls. “We are in 2023, and it is in this context that we grew up, our generation. We have to adapt. I feel like we’re used to it. They’ll find something to say about anybody like Jayson Tatum who had a rough start in Game 6, I believe, against Philadelphia. What are we talking about ? He finished the encounter on a high and brought them back to the score, which forced Game 7. Whether it was good or bad opinions, it didn’t matter. »
