After long months of rumors, the soap opera Dejounte Murray has ended. Adrian Wojnarowski dropped a beautiful “Woj Bomb” in the middle of the night announcing the departure of the leader for New Orleans. Between the rumors which evoked a possible return of Dejounte Murray to San Antonio, the possible arrival of Darius Garland in Louisiana, or the prospect of negotiations in view of the Draft around the first choice of Atlanta, it is ultimately the Pelicans and the Hawks who found common ground the day after the second evening of the Draft.
The Pelicans managed to convince their counterparts by agreeing to give in Larry Nance Jr, EJ Liddell And Dyson Daniels but also two first Draft choices, from 2025 (via the Lakers) and 2027 (the least favorable between the Bucks' choice and that of the Pelicans).
One more asset for New Orleans, the opportunity to rebuild for Atlanta
For both franchises, it was about setting a clear new course for the future. On the one hand, the Pelicans add a new strong man to their major five, around CJ McCollum, Brandon Ingram and of course Zion Williamson. The arrival of Dejounte Murray should help the Pelicans climb the hierarchy in the West.
For the Hawks, a new beginning is looming. The failure of the Young-Murray association was clearly identified at the end of a two-season collaboration which did not bear fruit, with a setback in the first round in 2023 and a failure in the play-in this season. The departure of Dejounte Murray and the Draft of Zaccharie Risacher are an opportunity to bring new blood to a squad which is still looking for the right configuration. Atlanta therefore recovers two interesting defensive role players with interior Larry Nance Jr and Dyson Daniels, without forgetting two more future first choices to complete its system in the future.
It remains to be seen what the two franchises will do with the rest of their summer and whether any major moves are still to be expected, which could be the case in New Orleans as well as in Atlanta…
