Olympic Qualification Tournaments: Spain and Slovenia, top seeds

While waiting for the draw of the four groups for the Olympic qualifying tournaments, FIBA has named the four seedsas well as made up the different hats.

In pot 1, the four seeds of these tournaments, and they are Spain, Latvia, Slovenia and Lithuania. We therefore have four European nations, which will therefore not be able to compete during this final qualifying phase, which will designate the last four qualified.

Here is the composition of the six hats.

1: Spain, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia
2: Brazil, Italy, Greece, Poland
3: Puerto Rico, Montenegro, Dominican Republic, Finland
4: New Zealand, Georgia, Mexico, Lebanon
5: Croatia, Ivory Coast, Angola, Philippines
6: Egypt, Bahamas, Cameroon, Bahrain

Very precise rules for the composition of groups

Each Olympic Qualification Tournament will host two groups of 3 teams. Pots 1, 4 and 5 will feed into Group A, while Pots 2, 3 and 6 will feed into Group B. The four hosts will be split between the tournaments taking place in their country.

In order to preserve the geographical balance between the four tournaments, the following draw principles will apply:

– There cannot be more than two European teams in each group and no more than three European teams in each tournament.
– There can only be one team from the Americas per group.
– There can be a maximum of one team from Asia and Oceania in each tournament.
– There must be at least one African team in each tournament.
