DaRon Holmes II suffered a serious injury in a Summer League game against the Clippers. The Nuggets rookie, drafted 22nd overall, ruptured his Achilles tendon. As a result, his season is already over.
The Denver franchise has therefore requested a recruiting envelope – a “Disabled Player Exception” – to have the possibility of replacing it. The Athletic tells us that the NBA has ruled in favor of the 2023 champions.
Thus, $1.53 million was granted to the Nuggets, equivalent to half of DaRon Holmes II's salary for the 2024/25 season ($3,065,640 million).
The Colorado franchise, which already has fifteen players under contract, has until March 10, 2025 to use it.
Disabled Player Exception : when a franchise loses a player for a long period, it can ask the NBA to take advantage of an additional envelope to recruit a player. This “exemption”, granted after a study of the medical file, allows not to count the injured player's salary, and to offer a contract to his replacement for an amount equal to 50% of the injured player's salary. With this envelope, one can sign a free player or a player on the cut list, but also make a transfer. The duration of the contract of the player acquired by this exception cannot exceed one year, and with this envelope, one can only acquire one player.
