No immediate extension for Klay Thompson

As he enters the final year of his contract ($43.2 million), Klay Thompson is eligible for an extension and he would like to follow the example of his teammate Draymond Green.

Except that as Joe Lacob, the co-owner of the club, recently indicated, there is no hurry.

“His contract doesn’t expire until next year and we still have a lot of time ahead of us. We love him and he knows it. We will try to keep him for the rest of his career. »

The boss of the Warriors had thus explained that talks with Klay Thompson’s agent, regarding his extension, had begun. But for the moment these were simply first contacts.

At what level will it be?

“We had a few brief discussions with his agent”confirms Joe Lacob. “But it’s still early, very early. I expect we’ll have some big discussions soon. We’ll see if we can have Klay for a very long time. Which is clearly what we want. »

ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, confirms that the two camps have started to discuss but that nothing is imminent. It must be said that even if Klay Thompson still averaged 21.9 points and 41.2% 3-point success last season, we cannot say that he had a great season.

Often out of rhythm or out of step in Golden State’s attack, he forced a lot to try to find the target, and he is clearly no longer the defender he was before his two serious injuries.

In these conditions, the Warriors are logically waiting to see at what level the 33-year-old rearguard will perform this season before extending him. A campaign which could also allow Klay Thompson to increase his rating, in order to sign the last big contract of his career in the Bay, still alongside Stephen Curry.
