Even if he promised to play again in the near future, Lonzo Ball is already out for the 2023/2024 season, after his operation last March, unprecedented in the NBA: a cartilage transplant. Obviously bad news for the Bulls and for Nikola Vucevic, who remembers the matches he played with him.
“There was a lot of enthusiasm and you could feel it”he remembers for Yahoo Sports. “We fed on that, we started to move forward. As soon as we found the rhythm, everything was fine. Lonzo was important. With our team, he was above all a passer, involving everyone. With his defense and his shot, we could play much faster. »
But his confirmed absence may be a blessing in disguise because the former Orlando interior recalls that the uncertainties about his return weighed down the very average Bulls last season.
“We could tell ourselves that, once back, everything would be repaired. At first it was six weeks without him, then eight, then we talked about January, and finally maybe in the playoffs. For us, it was complicated, because we were expecting it. At least now we know he won’t be there. We have new players after good signings who will help us. It’s up to us, the players, to find the solutions to be better. »
However, Nikola Vucevic obviously has a thought for Lonzo Ball who, let us remember, has not played since January 2022 and has had knee surgery three times since…
“We feel sorry for him, he’s such a good player. Having to manage all that is really complicated. He is very positive, he always tries to find a way to get back on the court. A lot of people don’t see that, don’t see his rehab, all the things he’s doing to come back. Injuries are really the worst for a player. Careers, even if they are longer today, remain short and two and a half years for him is not nothing. »
