Nic Claxton remains Nets’ priority

“Are we going to reach an agreement with the Nets? We will see. » These words are those of Nick Claxton when the regular season had just ended. The Nets pivot is actually free this summer and his future could be written elsewhere than in Brooklyn. Even if for the Nets, keeping it is not in doubt.

“Nic is our number one priority, that’s clear.”, assures the GM Sean Marks. “We hope that he will stay for a good while, that we will build around him and with him. It's nice to see Nic's progress from his time at Georgia to here. He's only scratching the surface of what he could one day become. »

It would therefore be a shame to see him grow elsewhere while Brooklyn has been nurturing him since 2019 and he is coming off two good seasons. “It’s important to sign our players, to keep them, to help them progress,” continues the leader. “That’s what we did with Nic and others. This will be a priority. »

A future defender of the year?

As quality pivots will be rare during this offseason (Jonas Valanciunas, Isaiah Hartenstein), Nic Claxton will be able to aim for a nice contract at 15 or 20 million dollars per year. Enough to double his salary (9.6 million this season).

This is the price at which we keep a 25-year-old player who averaged 11.8 points, 9.9 rebounds and 2.1 blocks during this exercise. His new coach, Jordi Fernandez, is even ambitious for him. “I believe he will one day be defender of the year”announces the coach.

“He is a priority for us this summer”then insists Jordi Fernandez. “He is excellent on pick-and-roll, quick to get to the rim. It helps the movement of the ball. It's perfect for what we want to do in the future. »
