New York Renaissance, stronger than the Globetrotters

If the Harlem Globetrotters are known and recognized for being the greatest African-American basketball team of all time, they are not the first team composed of black players in the history of American basketball.

Four years before the Globetrotters, another team had emerged: the New York Renaissance, better known as the “Rens”. From 1923 to 1949, the New York Renaissance was a symbol of self-sacrifice and courage.

In an America where racism and xenophobia were commonplace, they will prove that a team made up of African-American players could dominate their sport.

Sorry, Globetrotters, but we wanted to pay tribute to these “Rens”.
