Nets owner says it's time for the NBA to make a comeback in China

Co-founder of Alibaba, Joe Tsai was in Macau in recent days, during a conference on business in sport. The opportunity to question the Taiwanese-Canadian billionaire about relations between the NBA and China, which have seriously cooled since 2019, and Daryl Morey's famous tweet in favor of the Hong Kong protesters.

For the owner of the Nets, it is time for the Great League to make its return to the Middle Kingdom.

“I think the NBA is in a very good position regarding its relationship with China”, he replied. “China is actually the largest fan base for the NBA. And water has flowed under the bridges.”

Joe Tsai ensures that the NBA “would love” organize meetings again in China. This is because the diplomatic incident took place while the Nets and the Lakers faced each other in China, during the preseason. Strange encounters, followed by a boycott by Chinese state television of all NBA matches for two years…

Four years later, relations between the NBA and China have slowly warmed up, but not to the point of seeing the Great League organize new meetings in the immense Chinese market.

But Joe Tsai, one of the most critical voices against Daryl Morey after his tweets, would like that to change.
