NCAA wants to limit sports betting in college

After having long opposed the legalization of sports betting, the NCAA had to lower its flag when the Supreme Court ruled in favor of New Jersey Governor Philip Murphy, in 2018in order to overturn the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) and thus legalize sports betting, at the discretion of the States.

As in professional sport, sports betting has therefore flourished in the university world, but the NCAA hopes that the latest controversies will help calm things down a little.

“Problems related to sports betting are becoming more and more common across the country” explains Charlie Baker, the president of the NCAA. “Sports betting continues to threaten the integrity of competition and leads to the harassment of student-athletes and professional athletes. The NCAA has worked with states to address these threats and many states have responded by banning specific gambling in college. »

The NCAA does not want to completely ban sports betting (which it would have difficulty legally doing) but simply limit it to match scores, excluding individual performances.

“This week, we will contact officials in states that still allow these bets to ask them to join Ohio, Vermont, Maryland and many other states and eliminate college prop bets.” The NCAA sets limits on sports betting to protect student-athletes and the integrity of the game. The problems of recent days across the country show that there is still work to be done » concludes Charlie Baker.
