NBA lays off ‘dozens’ of employees

The wave of job cuts that hit ESPN earlier this month is also affecting the NBA. THE Sports Business Journal reports that the league laid off “dozens” of employees on Thursday as part of its strategy to focus first on its growth areas such as digital and international activities.

Confirmed by Mike Bass, its communications manager, this clean cut in the workforce would concern employees on fixed-term contracts, as well as permanent contracts, and our colleagues cite the example of Mike Wade, “Director of Team Business & Partner Communications”, in post for 17 years.

“We are reallocating resources to our priority business areas, including digital and international growth, which has resulted in the elimination of a number of positions within the league office,” explains Mike Bass. According to the SBJ, the layoffs thus concerned departments that were not focused on revenue generation and therefore rather the “service” sectors.
