NBA approves sale of Hornets by Michael Jordan

It’s almost the end of the era Michael Jordan for the Hornets. As announced more than a month ago, the group of investors led by Gabe Plotkin, already a minority shareholder in the franchise, and Rick Schnall, minority shareholder in the Atlanta Hawks, will therefore take control of the North Carolina franchise.

The sale was approved yesterday by the “Board of Governors”, the council of owners, with 29 votes in favor against only one against (James Dolan of the Knicks). The amount would be around three billion dollars and everything should officially take effect within two weeks. As a reminder, Michael Jordan became the majority shareholder of the Hornets in 2010 for $275 million…

It is an understatement to say that the leader will not have had the same success as the player since his Bobcats, then his Hornets, have regularly appeared in the bottom of the conference table, apart from two participations in the playoffs in 2014 and 2016 for two eliminations in the first round against Miami. It was under the Kemba Walker era that he finally lived his best years. But on the whole, the results have been less than rosy.

The buyers, however, inherit a young team that could once again claim to switch to the right side of the conference next season. There are in any case the bases to build an ambitious project around LaMelo Ball, Terry Rozier, Miles Bridges or Brandon Miller.

As for Michael Jordan, he could remain invested in the franchise, but in a minority shareholder role.
