Naz Reid: “I didn’t want to go anywhere else”

Days before the market opened, Naz Reid agreed to a three-year contract with Wolves for $42 million. A good deal for him since he thus multiplies his salary by seven.

But with his strong performance, the pivot might have been able to get even more elsewhere. Above all, he cannot (in the short term) hope to be a starter in Minnesota, with Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert ahead of him.

Regardless, Naz Reid wanted to stay.

“Deep down, this is where I wanted to be”, he assures the Star Tribune. “I started my career here and I wanted to continue it here. I improved year after year, so it made sense. I didn’t want to go anywhere else. All my teammates and my coaches have been great with me. »

Franchise president Tim Connelly confirmed it. “He had opportunities elsewhere, but he has a special relationship with the coach and the team. His teammates love him. I can’t tell you the number of times his teammates told me to keep him. »

Naz Reid knows that the 2023/2024 season should look like the exercise that has just ended. He will be behind Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert in the rotation, but will have his chance, and if one of the two is injured, as was the case in 2022/2023, he will logically start.

“I’m here to fight and do my best, no matter who is in front of me, no matter what job I’m offered,” he advances. “Last season, with the arrival of Gobert, we were honest with Naz”, explains Chris Finch. “It didn’t bother him. His role changed several times but he remained confident he was ready. He was very important to us. »
