The lines continue to move in Charlotte, where the new shareholders have decided to renew the “front office”, with the first decision being the withdrawal of Mitch Kupchak, replaced by Jeff Peterson in a role of vice-president.
At 35 years old, Jeff Peterson already has plenty of experience in the NBA since he joined the management of the Hawks in 2012, before being promoted to director of scouting and assistant GM at the age of 27. It was in Atlanta that he met Rick Schnall, then minority owner of the Hawks, and now co-owner of the Hornets.
For more than four years, he worked as assistant GM of the Nets, fully participating in the rise of the New York franchise with the arrivals of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in particular, but also in the selections of Cam Thomas and Nic Claxton at the Draft. The two new co-owners of Charlotte, Rick Schnall and Gabe Plotkin, made the news official via a press release, and they are convinced that they have found the rare gem to relaunch the franchise.
“Jeff is a rising star in our league, known for his ability to evaluate players, his communication skills and his ability to develop strong relationships”, they declared. “ The experience he has gained working with several franchises and different GMs will be very useful to us. We look forward to working with Jeff as we continue to build our team.”
Establish a culture of winning
Jeff Peterson arrives in a new project where everything is to be built, since Charlotte has not reached the playoffs for almost eight years. This is the longest current drought in the NBA. While the Hornets recently traded Terry Rozier and Gordon Hayward, they plan to rely on LaMelo Ball, rookie Brandon Miller and their next high pick in the Draft to lay the foundations of the new project.
“Building a winning culture will take hard work, creative ideas and a collaborative approach,” warns the new strong man of the franchise. “I am looking forward to the challenge that awaits me. Carolina is basketball country, and Hornets fans are among the most loyal in the NBA. I can’t wait to be a part of this community and experience this passion.”
Jeff Peterson will be officially introduced today at a press conference at the Spectrum Center, and Miles Bridges seems rather delighted by his arrival. “He’s 35, right? It’s crazy… and it’s good to have new faces. Don't see it as a message against those who were in place, but it gives the impression of a 180° turn and that we are heading in the right direction. »
Remember that Miles Bridges is a free agent, and it is therefore Jeff Peterson who will decide, or not, whether to extend him…
