Mike Budenholzer fired by the Bucks!

Thunderbolt in Wisconsin, since Mike Budenholzer was dismissed from his post by the bucks (ESPN)!

Trained at Spurs School, where he was under Gregg Popovich from 1996 to 2013 as an assistant, “Coach Bud” arrived at Milwaukee from Atlanta in 2018, following a first successful experience as head coach on the Hawks bench (213 wins and 197 losses, for four playoff qualifications).

Named coach of the year in 2019, Mike Budenholzer then very quickly knew how to give a new dimension to the Bucks, around Giannis Antetokounmpo, by developing an attractive offensive game and a quality defense, culminating in this NBA championship title acquired in 2021, 50 years after the last won by the franchise.

But this season, even by snatching the best record in the league from the Celtics (58-24), the 53-year-old technician did not manage to survive the premature elimination of Milwaukee, in the first round of the playoffs against Miami ( 1-4). A series marked by the injury of the “Greek Freak” but also by the mourning of the coach, who lost one of his brothers in full confrontation, following a car accident.

The timing is a bit reminiscent of the departure of Dwane Casey from the Raptors, sacked in 2018 after suffering a “sweep” in the conference semi-finals against Cleveland, while Toronto had nevertheless finished in first place in the East and that the coach had been voted Coach of the Year.

Bucks GM Jon Horstwas in any case the first to react publicly, to pay tribute to “Coach Bud” via a press release. We are grateful for the culture of winning and leadership that Mike Budenholzer helped create in Milwaukee. »

There is no doubt that the position will be very popular in the coming weeks, Milwaukee remaining one of the strongholds of its conference. It will however be interesting to know the reaction of Giannis Antetokounmpo after this eviction, he who had publicly supported Jason Kidd after his dismissal during the 2017/18 season, but also that of Khris Middleton, who has a “player option” for next season…
