Working in Denver since 2015, Michael Malone was extended for several seasons, for one of the largest salaries in the league a few days ago. A logical reward for the coach who guided the Nuggets to the NBA title last June.
“We obviously have to thank Stan and Josh Kroenke, the Kroenke family (the owners) who continue to believe in me to be the leader of this team, after this historic season”, reacted the coach for the Denver Postnow that the news is official. “It’s a place where I sincerely enjoy working every day because I love the people there. »
Michael Malone is in his ninth season in Colorado. A total far from trivial because only three coaches have more seniority in their franchise than him: Steve Kerr, installed at Golden State since 2014; Erik Spoelstra, who arrived in Miami in 2008; and obviously Gregg Popovich, immovable in San Antonio since 1996.
Having his name alongside Kerr, Popovich, Spoelstra, Sloan…
With this extension, he should largely exceed ten years on the same bench. A hell of a performance in a league where coaches regularly jump.
“I grew up in this world and I know how difficult it is to be a coach, how complicated it can be for assistant coaches, for their families,” recalls the son of the late Brendan Malone, former coach, who died in early October. “When I arrived in Denver, my daughters were in elementary school and now they are leaving high school. This never happens in the NBA. Except for Kerr, Spoelstra and Popovich, or even Jerry Sloan. So I constantly remind myself how lucky I am. »
