Luka Doncic, new target of burglars

Bad week for Luka Doncicinjured his calf during the “NBA Christmas Game” against Minnesota on Wednesday for an absence that will last at least a month, and robbed two days later! It was Lara Beth Seager, the player's manager, who announced the bad news, ensuring however that no member of the family was present when Luka Doncic's home was visited on the night of Friday to Saturday.

“There was no one home at the time, and fortunately Luka and his family are safe. Luka has filed a complaint with the police and an investigation is underway”, she clarified. The damage would therefore only be material, with damage amounting to $30,000 in jewelry according to the Dallas Morning News, which obtained the police report.

Athletes, preferred targets of burglars

This phenomenon has been growing since the start of the season, and in the NBA, Mike Conley, Jaylen Brown and Bobby Portis have already paid the price. At the beginning of November Bobby Portis showed his determination to find the perpetrators, notably promising a reward of $40,000 to people likely to have information on the burglars, going so far as to share an extract from his surveillance videos.

In the NFL too, several players have already suffered the same fate: two Kansas City Chiefs players including Patrick Mahomes in October, and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow in December during an away game. As a result, the two leagues distributed a circular reminding players to take the best precautions to keep their homes as safe as possible. The homes and property of professional athletes are thus “increasingly becoming the target of burglaries by organized and competent groups”notably highlighted the NFL via Associated Press.

The NBA is also taking the problem head on and has revealed its first feedback following FBI investigations. A link between certain burglaries and “groups of South American thieves of several nationalities” has reportedly been established. The latter would be “well-organized, sophisticated networks that integrate advanced techniques and technologies, notably in pre-surveillance, drones and signal jamming devices”. Players will therefore have to be extra vigilant while waiting for the criminals to be found.
