LeBron James will have his jersey retired at the Lakers

Less than two weeks ago LeBron James has announced that it will resume its number 23 for next season, and thus abandon the #6, retired throughout the league to pay tribute to Bill Russell.

Back to his first love, therefore, for the King, who now knows that he will have his jersey retired in Los Angeles. It is Jeanie Buss who confirms it.

“The standard in Los Angeles is that to have your jersey retired, you have to be in the Hall of Fame”explains the owner of the Los Angeles franchise for sportskeeda. “There’s no doubt LeBron will be in the Basketball Hall of Fame, so when he does, his jersey will be retired. »

Which number: 23 or 6? Both ?

One question remains: which number will be retired? 23rd or 6th? Or even both, like Kobe Bryant, with his #8 and #24? “That’s a discussion for later”sweeps Jeanie Buss.

Because both numbers will have arguments. The 23 seems the logical choice since James will have worn it longer in California, and above all, it is with which he won the title in 2020. But it is with the 6 that he became the top scorer in NBA history, a unique and memorable moment in his career.

We can easily imagine that #23 will also be retired in Cleveland, and #6 in Miami, so keeping both in Los Angeles could be a good compromise. Anyway, LeBron James will then become, when the jerseys are on the ceiling of the halls, the first player to have three jerseys retired in three different teams in the NBA.

For the moment, only six players have two jerseys retired in two teams : Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Lakers and Bucks), Julius Irving (Sixers and Nets), Oscar Robertson (Bucks and Kings), Pete Maravich (Jazz and Hawks), Earl Monroe (Knicks and Wizards) and Shaquille O’Neal (Lakers and heat).

For specific reasons, Michael Jordan also has his jersey retired in two franchises, in Chicago of course, as well as in Miami. Except that, in Florida, it’s in the form of a tribute because he never played for the Heat.
