Kyrie Irving named Grant Williams to the Mavericks

Like the Wolves, the Mavericks returned to training before everyone else, and in a few hours, they will leave for Abu Dhabi for this double confrontation against Anthony Edwards’ teammates. In Dallas, there are some new faces, and above all a new voice with Grant Williams who arrives from Boston. A great pick for a formation that was disappointing in defense last season, and lacking a leader on this side of the field.

“I think we’re lucky to have Grant. To have this voice. He’s a winner, and you can see it on the pitch.” explains Jason Kidd about the former Celtics power forward.

When everything was going wrong last season, the Mavericks lacked a player capable of barking and remobilizing the troops. Doncic is a formidable leader, capable of pulling an entire group to the top. But the Slovenian cannot lead by example in defense, and he needed such an element at his side. This sort of PJ Tucker, capable of making a few “stops” but also of planting baskets that hurt in the corners.

A profile that the Mavericks did not possess

“He’s going to speak” warns his coach. “His voice is important. It’s something we didn’t have. He’s always had success in the NBA, and the guys on the team respect what he’s done in his career. I repeat, we are very lucky to have him. »

In Dallas, Grant Williams will meet Kyrie Irving whom he met at the Celtics. It was Irving who named the Mavericks…

“Grant was one of the players I mentioned” confirms Irving. “He was looking for a bigger role elsewhere, and I can’t blame someone for wanting to try to do more in the NBA. When he got this contract, I was proud of him but I also knew that the work was only just beginning for us.”
