Kristaps Porzingis, the Celtics’ Finals bonus?

Absent from the courts since April 29, and a calf injury in the series against the Heat, Kristaps Porzingis should be in gear for the start of the Finals on Thursday evening. This is what can be deduced from Saturday's training session since the Latvian completed the entire session with his teammates. It was a first since his injury.

“He did everything the others did” summarizes Joe Mazzulla. “We are going to go significantly stronger tomorrow. Today was pretty mild, but he did it all. »

As for Kyrie Irving, these Finals will have the taste of a reunion for Kristaps Porzingis who played two and a half seasons alongside Luka Doncic. Then transferred to the Wizards, the interior was the first big pick for the Celtics last summer, and president Brad Stevens was right. The Celtics had a remarkable regular season, and KP finished the campaign averaging 20.1 points and 7.2 rebounds with a fine 52% shooting.

A gradual return?

“He’s a great player. He does many great things for us” continues Joe Mazzulla. “Like anyone else, we want to know what gives us the best chance of winning, what gives us the best possible chance of winning this series, this match, these match-ups. When KP is at his best, he is great for us, and we know he will deliver.”

Clearly, the question is whether Kristaps Porzingis who has not played for a month is capable of playing on Thursday evening, and as a starter. Or should we reintegrate him gradually with a stint as 6th man.

“He has been through so much in this league that he has composure and temperament,” concludes Joe Mazzulla. “He remains the same. It never catches fire. There are no highs too high, no lows too low. He has a lot of perspective. »
