After spending two and a half years away from the courts between 2019 and 2022, Klay Thompson has found a fairly solid level of play this season, posting 21.9 points on average at 44% in shooting (including 41% from 3-pointers) and 88% in free throws.
Currently engaged in his ninth playoff campaign, which can allow him to win the fifth league title of his career, the back of the Warriors also knows that he will soon have to think about his contractual situation, because he will be a “free agent” in a year. According to ESPNhe would also expect to obtain a maximum contract from his leaders and this, from this summer.
Now 33, Klay Thompson isn’t sure he’ll get what he’s looking for in terms of salary. Already, because Golden State is in the red financially, “because” of the extensions of Stephen Curry, Andrew Wiggins then Jordan Poole. Then, because the five-time All-Star is aging and his best years are supposed to be behind him. Finally, because the NBA intends to penalize the most heavily spent teams, including the defending champions.
It is for these reasons that the future of his sidekick Draymond Green is not guaranteed with the Warriors either. But, if like Green he couldn’t find common ground with the Dubs, Klay Thompson will have plenty of contenders in the market a year from now, as he remains a top shooter and quality defender.
