A season is sometimes played on little things. For Texas Longhorns coach Rodney Terry, the soul of his team was strengthened by an unexpected visit in the midst of preparations last summer.
Although he only spent a year there, in 2006/07, before joining the NBA, Kevin Durant had indeed taken advantage of a visit to Austin to go to one of the training sessions at his old university. In all humility, the superstar of the league had put himself at the level of Rodney Terry’s players who came out dazzled by this improvised session.
“He hadn’t been back on campus for a long time,” slipped Rodney Terrywho was an assistant when KD played for the Longhorns. “He had the opportunity to train with our guys, and he got involved right away: ‘Everything you do, I do too’. I think our guys were looking around and going, ‘Wow, okay. Kevin participates in all the activities that we do.
Support of choice in this great adventure
The experience has in any case strengthened the bonds of the group, and demonstrated how much Kevin Durant remained attached to his former university, while he has notably kept in touch with Rodney Terry for the past 15 years.
“He spent time with the players we currently have in our squad, he trained with them,” added the coach. “He’s one of those guys who is invested in our program. He wants nothing but the best for Texas. As I have a personal relationship with him, I think what we are doing and how we are doing it at the moment is very important to him.
Eight months later, Texas is still in contention and is about to play its “Sweet Sixteen” match against Xavier tonight. There is no doubt that the Longhorns will be able to count on Kevin Durant among its most prestigious supporters, he who comments on the “March Madness” on social networks.
“Rodney Terry has led this team well on and off the pitch as one would expect. The fact that they end up in the ‘Sweeet Sixteen’ and have as much of a chance of winning the national championship as anyone else is a testament to the amazing job he’s done.”thus slipped KD.
