Josh Hart ready to make a sacrifice for the Knicks?

Josh Hart had until Saturday midnight to decide whether or not to activate his “player option”, and therefore decide whether to complete his contract for a 12.9 million dollar season, or to be a free agent. Clearly, the Knicks want to keep him but they obviously prefer that the former Blazers winger activate his “ player option to earn $12.9 million. On the player’s side, we prefer to decline it in order to be a “free agent” and negotiate a new, much more lucrative contract.

As the stakes are high, the two parties have decided to postpone the deadline, and the deadline is now set for Thursday, 48 hours from the start of the “free agency”. Ideally, for the Knicks, Hart agrees to complete his contract for $12.9 million, and he becomes eligible for a maximum contract extension of $81 million over four years.

This would allow the Knicks not to be in the red in terms of payroll, and to take advantage of a “midlevel exception” of $12.4 million to recruit a “free agent”.

“You always know what you’re going to get from Josh, he works so hard. He is a dog in the field. He does everything “, reacted Bridges about his friend and former teammate’s situation at Villanova. “Obviously I know he wants to be in New York and I think he should get what he deserves. You will always need a guy like that, and they needed a guy like Josh. »

Player option : possibility for a player to activate (or not) the last year of his contract, in order to end his lease or become free agent a year in advance.

Mid-level exception : envelope of approximately 12 million dollars available each year to recruit all NBA franchises that do not pay luxury tax. They can use it on one or more players. A team that has to pay the luxury tax only has 6.5 million. From 2023/24, if a team greatly exceeds the high bar of the salary cap (by more than 17.5 million dollars), it loses its “mid-level exception”.
