After two seasons in a row to finish second in the votes, behind Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid finally won the MVP trophy this year, ahead of the Serbian pivot. A great moment for the kid from Yaounde, Cameroon.
“It’s hard to win in this league, to succeed there”recalls the pivot of the Sixers for ESPN. “It’s no coincidence that they are the best players in the world, so it’s fabulous to have won this MVP trophy. »
This coronation is also an example to follow for the youngest.
“I always wanted to be a role model, especially for Cameroon, for Africans, and seeing me, they can tell themselves that I have succeeded. Because the odds for someone like me, who started basketball at 15, of winning the MVP trophy were probably negative. In general, you don’t have a lot of opportunities when you come from Africa. But improbable does not mean impossible. We can do anything if we want to. You have to believe in it and work hard. Everything can happen. »
It is on this last point that Joel Embiid wants to insist. Becoming the MVP of the season is not only about being the best player in the regular season, it is also validating the work done on a daily basis.
“I think a lot of people have the wrong perception of things, they confuse being competitive with wanting to win everything,” pursues the All-Star. “I didn’t want to win this trophy just because he’s the MVP. I wanted it because it means a lot to me. I’ve been through a lot and it’s a validation of the sacrifices. In a way, it all paid off. »
