If James Harden did not play a single game during the Sixers preseason, while awaiting his transfer, Joel Embiid made his debut last night, during a success against the Hawks (120-106).
The pivot certainly compiled 21 points and 5 rebounds, but he mainly scored on the free throw line (14/15), logically appearing rusty in the game, with a small 3/12 shooting. Nevertheless, the reigning regular season MVP was satisfied with his return, alongside a hot De’Anthony Melton (29 points at 6/10 from afar).
This is because in Nick Nurse’s system, he no longer stops the ball like in previous seasons.
“This is how I always wanted to play” he assures. “I never liked being an isolation player. I don’t think that’s the right way to play, nor the right way to win. So I like this system. »
In Philadelphia’s new offense, Joel Embiid serves as both a finisher and a relay, finding the best option available. A philosophy to which he seems to completely adhere.
“It’s not just about me. Today there were a few passes that the guys weren’t expecting. But I tell them, ‘When you cut, do it all the way. You have to cut to get to the end. And you have to be ready to receive the ball.’” he explains to his teammates.
The intentions are good. It remains to be seen whether they will last, but Joel Embiid assures that this is the path to follow.
“And I hope it helps us win.” he concludes.
