Philly did more than hold the house in the absence of James Harden, out for a month with a tendon injury in his right foot. Since November 2, the Sixers have lined up eight wins for five losses, thanks in particular to their defensive adjustments.
Players no longer switch across all screens, allowing Joel Embiid to remain a deterrent in the paint and visibly offers more stability to the defense of Doc Rivers, who has integrated the top 3 of the league, behind the Bucks and the Cavaliers.
On this point the return of James Harden will not modify the new directives of Doc Rivers.
“We don’t switch anymore. Obviously we have a system in place. I think at the beginning of the year, the mistake we made was to try to switch a lot from position 1 to 5”, said Joel Embiid. “But what I know for sure is that we’re going to keep doing what led us to become one of the top three defenses in the league. It will be alright. And I think this year he’s been good at that level, so I don’t think he’ll have any problems or adjustments to make.”
An essential role in the creation
As for the attack, James Harden, his team’s best passer, should return to his role as creator, which will undoubtedly mean fewer opportunities in the position for Joel Embiid or other “role players” brought to do more for a month.
“When players get injured, it opens up new opportunities for others. Everyone else has the chance to take more shots. But when you find someone like him, who is such a good creator, you have to put the ball in his hands. So we have to deal with that.”, added Sixers center. “As for the movement of the ball in attack, it also relies a lot on my shoulders. It’s up to me to make sure our attack stays moving.
For Joel Embiid, the return of James Harden is above all good news for the animation and variety of the Sixers attack, while Tyrese Maxey is still unavailable (foot).
“As I said, his return is going to be mostly fun. We need a lot of help, and he’s one of our best players. He is so good. So anything that can benefit us right now, we take it.”he concluded.
