A month ago, Jaylen Brown said that Joe Mazzulla had the particularity of letting his players manage during complicated passages. Rather than taking a time-out, he is a supporter of “laisser-faire”, and his players appreciate it.
“I find that sometimes it’s good” recognized Brown. “It challenges us not only for the situation we are facing, but also to do better next. We’ve been in the NBA long enough to know how to find our spots and how to fix some of our mistakes. We have a balanced team, which means that our head coach trusts us and encourages us to find solutions. »
Not an exact science
Since Mazzulla has confirmed this trend, and especially recently against the Lakers. While his team had wasted a 20-point lead and the Lakers had outright taken a 13-point lead, Ime Udoka’s replacement had stubbornly refused to take a time-out.
“I don’t think there’s any real evidence that taking a time-out works on sets” believes the Boston coach. “I think it’s just a feeling, and people have gotten used to watching it over time. We were down 92-88 and I called a time out, we scored to go 92-90, but they responded with a 6-0. Result, apart from making us lose more points, what was the use of this time-out? »
For Mazzulla, his method is adapted to his team with a group that comes out of an NBA Finals and elements that have been playing together for several years.
“I think it’s knowing your team. I think it’s being on the same page collectively.” he continues. “I think it’s an awareness and a mindset of how the game is going and when it slips away from us, what are the things we can do to get back? Because I think a lot of times when a team is on a roll, it’s mostly because of our own mistakes. »
“Joe always tells us that he won’t come to save us”
Mazzulla appreciates that its players analyze their own problems, and that they can solve them together. For him, there is no miracle method, and it is especially necessary that the group adheres to this way of doing things.
“Our guys are doing a great job of moving forward and understanding what these issues are, and how we can quickly address them. But I’m not sure there’s any real evidence that one method works more than another. I think it’s more about seeing what fits your team, what you can get them to accept and how they respond. »
Monstrous against the Lakers with his 44 points and his basket of equalization, Jayson Tatum summarizes this way of doing things: “Joe always tells us that he won’t come to save us. Especially in times when we don’t play as we should. He has already told us several times: “Make your own way! “. He challenges us. »
