JO 2024 | In diesel mode, Germany manages to push aside Greece

After Lille, it's time for Paris and the Arena Bercy. A little late, we meet Dennis Schröder's family outside the hall who are looking for access to the stands. On the field, the Mannschaft are looking for access to the baskets. And it's Greece Giannis Antetokounmpo who made a great start to take the lead!

Giannis Antetokounmpo is in bulldozer mode, Johannes Voightmann needs treatment and Vasilis Spanoulis's team already has a 12-point lead (21-9) in the first quarter!

Everything is complicated for Germany, with unusual turnovers for this well-oiled collective. But even at -10 (21-11) after a quarter-time, the Mannschaft is not world champion for nothing. Moritz Wagner brings his contagious energy and, by tightening the defense on the “Greek Freak” while rediscovering his game of percussion and shifts, Gordon Herbert's team catches up. At half-time, the gap has evaporated (36-36).

An unbearable Franz Wagner

It was Dennis Schröder, with a 3-pointer, that allowed Germany to take the lead immediately after the break. But Greece had no intention of giving up, with Thomas Walkup and Kostas Papanikolaou also responding from afar.

Greece regains a slight lead (47-42) but the German defensive intensity increases instantly, and Franz Wagner punishes, on the counterattack then with a 3-pointer. Isaac Bonga does a lot of good for the Mannschaft again, which allows his team to take a slight lead (59-52) at the start of the last quarter.

Germany took control of the match. Despite his four fouls, Franz Wagner continued to attack the Greek defense, with Vassilis Spanoulis's team lacking the weapons to fight against the world champions.

It is therefore logically Germany which reaches the semi-final (76-63), for the first time in its history at the Olympic Games, where Dennis Schröder and his teammates will face the winner of the duel between France and Canada.
