On the cusp of its 17th season in the League, Jeff Green intends to take advantage of this new campaign with the Rockets. A veteran who was little used by Ime Udoka last year, with only 17 minutes of play for 6 points per game, he is no longer so worried about his statistical contribution at this stage of his long career.
Above all, formerly of Georgetown, Jeff Green was inevitably marked by the recent disappearance of Dikembe Mutombo, one of the legends of the Hoyas, but also of the NBA after his 18 years between Denver, Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York… and Houston at the end career precisely!
“My rookie season, we played them in preseason and I asked him how he was, knowing that it was the very end of his career. He told me that all he was looking for was to have fun. explains Jeff Green in the Houston Chronicle. “When he went to training, he rode his bike and when the players did something stupid, he would shout at them before getting back on his bike. He enjoyed every moment. Honestly, I’m at this point in my career now! I enjoy every moment with my teammates, the coaches, the media, all the staff around. I know it's going to be over soon so I'm enjoying every moment. »
Not spared from physical problems during his career, notably this famous open heart operation during his young years with Boston, Jeff Green had already fully appreciated his chance of being able to play in the Big League. The death of “Mount Mutombo” reinforced this belief.
“That’s what you have to do when you get to my age”
“As you get older, you know you can’t take anything for granted anymore. Every opportunity is worth taking. That's why I always have a smile on my face and why I always want to have fun. Because I don't know when it will end. I want to make sure I sink my teeth into my NBA experience. »
While Jabari Smith Jr. must take a step forward in his progress, Tari Eason will return from injury coming off the bench, or even Steven Adams will also absorb precious minutes on the interior rotations, Jeff Green does not really know how it will be used this season in Texas.
Without certainty about his playing time, the veteran doesn't care. He actually prefers to think about the team first… and all these moments of sharing that he wants to enjoy before heading off into the sunset.
“For me, it’s more about the team. I want to be able to use my basketball IQ and versatility to help make the team better. This is one of my challenges this season. I have always liked challenges. This is a new chapter in my career, but I see what I can bring to the team and I am 100% ready to help in this role. I know I'm a veteran in a youth team but I plan to pass on everything I've learned to my teammates and help them become better professionals. That's what you have to do when you get to my age. »
