Jayson Tatum calls his expulsion a joke

The final seconds of the third quarter are ticking away. Jayson Tatum tries to outflank Robert Covington, but a two-hander is made by the Sixers. The Boston winger loses the ball and lets his left forearm drag. He punches Covington in the face. The referees therefore whistle an offensive foul on Tatum.

Everything could have ended there. But the Boston star, already sanctioned with a technical foul at the start of the match, does not agree with this decision and decides to let the officials know. Referee Nick Buchert takes his whistle and sends the player off!

“I was extremely surprised. Everyone saw the images, even without knowing what I said, which doesn't matter at this moment. I do not agree. One of the assistant coaches also disagrees. But I can't go back,” did he react to ESPN.

Jayson Tatum has seen worse

The men in gray obviously have another reading of the situation. “After a loose ball, Jayson Tatum continued to complain multiple times when he was asked to return to his bench,” explains the evening's head referee, Bill Kennedy. “He insisted and made obvious gestures towards the referees. Which earned him a second technical foul. »

Has the player overdone it by going overboard? Response from the interested party. “They were ready to take me out,” he smiled. “I wasn't angry and I didn't insult the referees. No insults. Bill and I were having a conversation. I've been in the league for a while and I've seen worse. I saw reactions and behaviors being tolerated much longer. »

Fortunately for the Celtics, the absence of Jayson Tatum did not prevent Joe Mazzulla's troops from winning against the Sixers. And the player moved on.

“Maybe they didn’t want me to play. After my expulsion, I left calmly. I sat in a chair, with ice cream, without anger. It was like a joke, I laughed about it. I'm not going to cry about it. I just watched the rest of the game and our victory. »
