Eye injuries and the Cavaliers is history repeating itself this year. We remember that, from the first meeting of the season, Darius Garland had been hit in the left eye, then had spent five matches in the infirmary, fortunately avoiding the operation.
Five months later, Jarrett Allen experienced the same misfortune. The Cleveland center took a hit to the right eye against Miami in a rebound battle. Result: four matches missed.
“Everyone thought it would be worse, because my pain was immense”, he tells The Athletic. “I didn’t know what to expect and I’m happy that it ended like this. I took quite a hit, but nothing serious structurally. I can handle the pain, the rehabilitation and I know that in my eye my future is stable. »
Nevertheless, these ten days in the infirmary were not pleasant since an eye injury is never easy to live with… “Awkward, it’s the perfect one for that”, he continues. “Winking hurt me. »
Then, even if he is not 100%, after putting ice on his eye and refusing to wear glasses (the famous “goggles”), Jarrett Allen felt that he was ready to return for the meeting in Brooklyn. The doctors assured him that he could play again without risk.
“It’s the back of my eye that is affected and it will heal over time. I had to make sure I didn’t see blurry, didn’t see three hoops and ran straight. Was I able to adapt and play? I checked all the boxes, I was ready. »
With 12 points, 14 rebounds and 2 blocks in the victory over the Nets, the pivot made a successful comeback, which was highlighted by his coach and his teammates.
“He is always well placed. As long as he is in the key, we see him and the attackers are not going to want to approach. Brooklyn is a good team to go in the racket, that’s how they manage to have so many 3-point shots. There, with Allen, they no longer have that advantage,” relates JB Bickerstaff. “He is an unsung hero”, insists Donovan Mitchell. “He does a lot of things that you can’t see in the statistics and it’s visible at parties like this. We are happy to have him back. »
