James Borrego and Kenny Atkinson compete to coach the Cavaliers

A short week ago, the president of the Cavs Koby Altman had confided in giving himself a month to find the successor of JB Bickerstaff, dismissed after more than four years of loyal service, moving Cleveland from 15th to 4th place in the Eastern Conference. The idea is to have a technician in place before the Draft, the first round of which will take place on June 26.

Since time will pass very quickly, the Ohio franchise has already worked to find the rare bird. ESPN has confirmed that the Cavs had the agreement of Golden State and New Orleans to speak respectively with Kenny Atkinson And James Borrego. Two names that have come back since the dismissal of JB Bickerstaff, both with profiles likely to interest Cleveland.

Two “first assistants” with experience as “head coaches”

Kenny Atkinson is practically in all the rumors as soon as a position becomes available in the NBA, and for good reason, the current assistant coach of Steve Kerr at the Warriors (and of Vincent Collet in the French team since last December) made a strong impression when he took charge of Brooklyn during his only experience as head coach, from 2016 to 2020, bringing a project and a strong playing identity to the Nets. After bouncing to the Clippers in Tyronn Lue's staff, he has now been with the Warriors for more than three years. He also almost replaced James Borrego two years ago at the Hornets!

James Borrego was also head coach for four years in Charlotte, after a first experience in Orlando as interim coach. If he had less success than Kenny Atkinson, due in particular to repeated injuries to major players, he was able to develop a good base between LaMelo Ball, Terry Rozier, Devonte' Graham, Miles Brigdes, the twins Caleb and Cody Martin, or even PJ Washington. On the other hand, he had a much less hollow nose by not exploiting the potential of Malik Monk, or by putting Nicolas Batum on the shelf, while the Frenchman had subsequently shown that he could still provide proud services in NBA.

Rather good at advancing a group, as the Cavs undoubtedly expect to develop their Garland-Mitchell-Mobley-Allen quartet, the two do not, however, have enormous experience at the top of the basket in the NBA as head coaches , and yet this is what Cleveland is looking for, as Koby Altman had specified, to pass this last milestone which separates his team from the last steps leading to the quest for a title.
