During his first two seasons with the Hawks, Jalen Johnson had never exceeded 16 points in a game. Helmed by John Collins, the former Duke was biding his time. Who came this season to Georgia.
Atlanta's pleasant start to the season was unfortunately slowed down by a wrist injury, which kept him off the field for a month. Now back, the explosive winger has taken flight again alongside Trae Young.
Against the Wizards, he had already broken his points record (24) in the previous match. He did even better against the Thunder, with 28 points on 11/18 shooting, 7 rebounds, 4 interceptions and 3 assists. He notably chained dunks, like this sequence where he dribbles behind his back on the counter-attack to dunk against Josh Giddey. Or even this poster on Chet Holmgren! Enough to ignite the Hawks room, and impress its playmaker…
Trae Young: “He will continue to surprise people, progress and break his records”
“He’s going to achieve career bests every night this season” assures Trae Young. “We're not surprised, because it's really the first year that he's had playing time. We can see the work he's doing and we see what it gives. The more he continues, the more comfortable he will be. He just has to keep repeating things, touching the ball more, shooting more. He will continue to surprise people, progress and break his records. »
Despite foul problems, Jalen Johnson weighed heavily on the match, his two-man game with Bogdan Bogdanovic helping to resist the Thunder's comeback at the end. Quin Snyder especially noted his ability to relieve Trae Young and Dejounte Murray when opponents force the Hawks backcourt to let go of the ball.
“At the level of what we can call the creation of the game, or the fact of serving as a relay, he is more and more comfortable” notes the coach. “And our team is becoming more and more comfortable with the idea of giving him the ball in his hands. Whether it was on a quick play or, like tonight, in situations where they were taking double catches on our backs. He is capable of creating things, and creating things for others as well. We saw him do that in training but doing it in a match, against good teams, is something we need from him. »
