Los Angeles. A city apart in the career of Michael Jordanbecause it was there that he won his first NBA title, in 1991 with the Bulls, and won his first Olympic gold medal, in 1984 with Team USA.
Inevitably, March 28, 2003 is a special date for “His Airness”, which is playing the final match of its glorious career in the “City of Angels”, against the best team in the world: the Lakers. Three-time defending champions, they are guided by the golgoth Shaquille O’Neal and the young prodigy Kobe Bryant.
Not an easy task for Michael Jordan (20.0 points average), 40 years old and now a member of the Wizardsin a duel that promises to be a transfer of power between master Jordan and student Kobe.
Michael shines, but Kobe shines more…
A month earlier, it should be remembered, Kobe Bryant had ruined Michael Jordan’s party at the All-Star Game in Atlanta (well helped by the referee…). But number 8 in Los Angeles is having a huge season. We can even speak of “Jordanesque standards”, because he averages 30.0 points, 6.9 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 2.2 steals!
For this last confrontation, the “Mamba” wants to mark the spirits against the best player in history. “MJ” is given a standing ovation by the Californian public and he starts the game strong, with three baskets and a dunk on the counterattack. In its wake, Washington starts the match better than the “Purple & Gold”.
But Kobe Bryant answers him and he won’t stop: 19 points after twelve minutes and a start to the second quarter of madness. He chained the 3-pointers and, out of the 38 units of the Lakers, he has already scored 30, including 23 in a row, with a… 9/9 to shoot!
The 24-year-old full-back finished the first half with a staggering total of… 42 points! All at 8/11 from 3-pointers and we will almost forget that Michael Jordan has (already) scored 17 points, at 50% address.
An “incredible demonstration”
The third quarter is then calmer. The gap climbs to +20 in favor of Los Angeles and we will especially remember the image of the forceful passage of Kobe over Jordan at the end of the quarter. ” Everybody knew you weren’t gonna make the pass “, will joke the legend of Chicago with the future legend of the Lakers, according to actor John Cusack present in the front row.
Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant will also talk to each other at the end of the match, as during the All-Star Game a few weeks earlier, and after a foul on Shaquille O’Neal, “His Airness” takes his sixth and must go out. He was then given a standing ovation while the Lakers pivot fired his free throws.
Ultimate symbol of this transfer of power, won 108-94 by Phil Jackson’s men, Jordan finished with 23 points, while Kobe finished with 55 points on the clock (at 9/13 from 3-pointers). It’s quite simply the record of the season, accompanied by a franchise record of 42 points in a single half (he beat it when he scored 81 points…)!
The revenge of a “psychopath”
Asked after the meeting, about this famous passing of the baton, Michael Jordan confided: “ He certainly has part of the torch. But others carry it with him. »
For his part, Shaquille O’Neal will give us Shaquille O’Neal: ” There will never be another Michael Jordan. Kobe is focused on one thing: to be the first Kobe Bryant. »
Still with the Warriors at that time, before joining the Wizards a few months later, Gilbert Arenas will split a tasty anecdote about Kobe Bryant’s competitive spirit.
” In Washington, Michael takes the win [en novembre 2002, ndlr] and he slaps Kobe on the butt and says, ‘You can put on the shoes [celles de sa marque, Jordan Brand] but you will never be able to walk in my footsteps. It was then said that Kobe did not speak to his teammates for two weeks. He just kept silent, he was on a mission. The team asked Phil Jackson: ‘Phil, what’s going on with Kobe? He’s mad at us?’ Phil replied: ‘No, he’s not mad at you, it’s about what Michael said to him in Washington… – What, two weeks ago!? “Yes, he told him he could copy him as much as he wanted, do whatever he wanted, he would never follow in his footsteps”. The players grimaced and understood that day what was going to happen against Michael when he came to Los Angeles. Kobe didn’t even have to tell the team about it. Once they caught wind of what had happened, they knew what Kobe was set on doing. And he gave him 55 points. He’s a psychopath. »
The final word for Phil Jackson, who knows the two monsters well: “ It was an incredible demonstration. We got to a point where there was this curiosity factor: is he going to score 80 points? I’m sure he had it in mind. »
The “Zen Master”, who knew everything with Jordan and Kobe, did not think so well to say…
