The beginning of March was not ideal for Grant Williams. Especially against the Cavaliers. Set aside for the first duel between Cleveland and Boston, we remember that the interior then flinched on the free throw line at the worst moment in the second.
These two moments symbolize the difficulties of Grant Williams since the resumption of the season, after the All-Star Break. He is especially angry with his 3-point shooting, posting only a 32% success in this area, where he had shot at 42% until February.
This clumsiness is explained in particular by an injury to the right elbow. The player has indeed been injured in the ligaments since the meeting against the Sixers on February 8.
“It’s a weird injury but I’m playing with it because it’s what the team needs to do,” he explains for The Athletic. “It doesn’t matter if my stats and minutes drop because of that, we do what it takes to help the team win. »
Except that a pain in the right arm, it is obviously not practical to shoot, even less to be effective and regular. Therefore, cortisone injections are performed to relieve it.
“At the beginning, it was a question of confidence because, when you talk about being embarrassed to shoot, you become hesitant to shoot. You have to let go and not think about it too much. That’s my mentality right now: if I’m open, I shoot. If that’s not the shot the coach wants, he’ll tell me. My shoot is going well because the meds are helping. »
His very good 4/5 at 3-pointers against the Cavaliers was certainly overshadowed by his clumsy free throws late in the game, but it did not solve all of Grant Williams’ problems. Because he remained on a 2/13 (in five games) before this match, then afterwards, against the Blazers, he only made a pale copy of 2/7 behind the arc.
One instruction remains: clumsiness or not, the Boston player will continue to try his luck.
“It’s about me maintaining that perspective: if I have an open or uncontested shot, I have to take it. It doesn’t matter if I put 12 or no shots, I have to be there, I have to try to perform, to have an impact on the wins. Nothing else matters. »
