Who will be elected WNBA Rookie of the Year? It is impossible to know with a few games left in the regular season since the two big favorites Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese each make historic debuts, and every night they write a new line in the WNBA history books.
On Sunday, it was Angel Reese who made history by setting the new single-season rebounding record. In the (new) defeat against the Lynx, she accumulated 17 points and 19 rebounds, and with 418 rebounds since the start of the season, she erases Sylvia Fowles' record (404), set in 2018. Ironically, Sylvia Fowles had graduated from LSU like her.
The WNBA's Dennis Rodman
Since the start of the season, the Sky center has averaged 12.9 catches, and she already held the record for catches in a game, the number of games in a row with 20 or more rebounds and the number of double-doubles for a rookie!
“Coming into the WNBA, I knew my engine,” reacted Angel Reese. “Offensive and defensive rebounding is something I always know I can do. I knew it would translate right away. A lot of people think it’s because I get my own misses, but statistically, that’s not the case. People think it’s because I’m the biggest guy on the court, and I’m not. It’s being able to go out there and do things that a lot of people don’t want to do. Defense and rebounding wins championships. And I’ve won championships at every level doing that.”
The defeats keep coming…
Unfortunately, the Sky lost their sixth straight game, and have won just one game since the restart after the Olympics. With an 11-21 record, the Sky are in a tough spot to make the playoffs.
“It's hard because I've never lost so many matches in my life…” Angel Reese sighs. “Being able to stay mentally in this situation is the most positive. We are still in the playoff race. I am looking forward to the next game, there are ways to improve and learn from this game.”
