In Golden State, an imbalance in free throws that weighs

If Stephen Curry and the other Warriors were so annoyed with the referees last night against the Bucks, it’s because Golden State has had a problem with fouls since the start of the regular season.

Steve Kerr’s troop is thus both the team that shoots the fewest shots this season (19 attempts per game) and the one that offers the most to its opponents (26.3). As they are generally a little more skilful than their opponents in the field, it’s only 5.6 shots scored difference, but it’s a difference that still matters, and that’s part of the reason for Golden State’s problems at the outside (2 wins – 12 losses).

At Chase Center, Warriors opponents shoot 5.3 free throws more on average per game, compared to 9.3 when Golden State does not play at home…

“It’s basically the difference when you lose” assured Steve Kerr after the defeat against the Bucks, while Giannis Antetokounmpo shot almost as many free throws (17, out of a total of 32 for the Bucks) as the Warriors (19). “Overall, that seems to be the difference. At halftime, there was a 12-point gap and they had 10 shots more than us. These throws are killing us. I say it all the time. It’s not just free points for the other team, it’s also that we come up against a defense placed after those throws. »

The coach’s feeling is not really confirmed by the stats since if Golden State lost the games with the biggest differences in the field (31 free throws against the Magic!), the team also lost three of the four games in which she had more free throws than her opponents.

This imbalance is above all the symbol of a desperate defense, which commits many faults in particular to compensate for its lack of size and physical impact. Last year, the Warriors thus shot a little more shots (20.3 per game) but they especially offered less (22.3) to their opponents.

“It’s a bit linked to our way of playing”confirmed Stephen Curry. “We shoot a lot of 3-pointers, that’s how we are built. But we can hope to receive the disputed whistles or at least the ones that are clear from the reaction of the guys. If I explode like this, it’s not to waste my energy, try to cheat or lack fair play by claiming phantom fouls. I explode when a whistle is missed. But hey, our style is based on space, jump shots, ball movement. We can only hope that those who analyze the game are fair and consistent. »
