In Boston, we are optimistic about the contract extension of Jaylen Brown

He is not a free agent, but Jaylen Brown is one of the centers of attraction this summer. The All-Star fullback/winger has the option to extend this summer, and it’s the amount that’s eye-catching: $295 million over five years.

It’s the biggest possible contract, also called “super max extension”, and we wonder about the Celtics’ desire to offer him the maximum.

For now, it’s still being discussed and Brad Stevens, the president of the franchise, is optimistic.

“I can’t really talk about it, but it’s about good discussions” he assures. “We want Jaylen to be here for a very long time, and we’ve made that clear. We look forward to all sitting together and having time here. I probably shouldn’t say anything else, but I’m optimistic”.

Clauses included in the contract?

Among the elements that can slow down discussions, or even block them, there is the addition of a “trade kicker”, this bonus that a player receives in the event of a transfer.

It has become commonplace in the NBA, but it can be a hindrance in the context of an exchange. In addition, Jaylen Brown may want a “player option” to test the market before the end of this five-year lease.

On the other hand, it cannot include an “anti-transfer” clause since it is reserved for players who extend within the framework of “free agency”. Which is not the case this year.
