Hurricanes in Florida: the family that owns the Magic announces $600,000 in donations

The DeVos family once again in support of the local population. The latter, at the head of the Magic, announced a $500,000 donation to the NGO United Way of Florida through the family foundationto assist in relief efforts related to Hurricanes Helen and Milton in the state of Florida.

Additionally, Ryan DeVos, Magic's vice president of shareholder engagement, and his wife, Michelle, announced a $100,000 contribution to another NGO, Heart of Florida United Wayfor the same cause.

The DeVos family and the Magic franchise, which had a preseason game canceled due to weather conditions, are working closely with local partners and officials to indirectly help those most affected in Central Florida and throughout the region.

Billions of damage

According to a recent assessmentHurricane Milton caused at least 16 deaths and 50 billion in damage in a region already devastated by the passage of the powerful Hurricane Helene, approximately two weeks earlier. This caused at least 237 victims in the United States, around twenty in Florida.

In its press release, the DeVos family recalled having contributed, in 2022, more than a million dollars to relief efforts following the devastation caused by Hurricane Ian.

Two years earlier, it had set up a $2 million compensation fund for part-time employees of the Magic, Kia Center, Lakeland Magic and Solar Bears, about 1,800 people, during the suspension of their activity because of Covid.

The Devos also contributed $1 million in 2004 to support relief efforts in several counties following Hurricane Charley, and made a $400,000 donation to the One Orlando Fund following the attack on the Pulse nightclub in Orlando in 2016 (50 dead).
