The Knicks had until Saturday to decide on the case Landry Shamet and management decided to cut him following his dislocation of the right shoulder contracted against Charlotte on Tuesday evening. The shooting guard had joined the roster via a simple invitation to camp and his ouster will therefore only cost the New York franchise $15,000.
It is a hard blow for the player who had done what was necessary to gain the trust of Tom Thibodeau and whose presence was no longer in doubt after the exchange between New York and Minnesota which saw Donte DiVincenzo leave for the Wolves.
Three places to take
For now, New York only has 12 guaranteed contracts and it will need two more within 28 days, according to NBA regulations. The trail of veterans like Marcus Morris or Lonnie Walker IV could catch on. The second round of Draft Ariel Hukporti, could also go from a “two-way contract” to a guaranteed contract. Note that TJ Warren and Chuma Okeke were also cut.
As for Landry Shamet, the duration of his unavailability is not yet known, since the player would still hesitate to go through the operation box. “I don’t know all the details”, Tom Thibodeau admitted on Friday. “I rely on what I have. This is a dislocated shoulder. He's still gathering information and we're leaving it at that. He is therefore already tackling rehabilitation. And I like it. He also needs more information.”
