Having heart surgery in 2012, Jeff Green didn’t imagine playing this long

Few players will have traveled more than Jeff Green in the NBA. The interior has worn the jersey of eleven different franchises and is thus not far from the record (twelve teams) of his former teammate Ish Smith, with whom he won the title with Denver last June.

If he does not discover a new city by joining Houston this summer, since he played a few matches with the Rockets at the start of 2020 then in the “bubble”, he will nevertheless add one more season to his tally . Its 17th. A huge total for a player, remember, who had open heart surgery in January 2012.

“It’s been eleven years now. So I enjoy these simple moments, where I play basketball and I am with my teammates. I don’t take anything for granted.” assures Jeff Green for the Houston Chronicle. “That’s what I do every year. Every season I’m lucky to add another year to my career, because everything could have ended in my fifth season. Here I am in my 17th season continuing to play a sport that I love. I appreciate these little moments because I don’t know how much time I have left. »

“After my operation in 2012, I no longer looked ahead. I wanted to stay in the moment, in the present”

You don’t get rid of such a powerful memory like that – an operation that lasted five hours then a sleepless season – nor obviously a twenty-centimeter scar on your chest, which will always be there.

“The trauma happened. I put it in the past tense and I don’t want to think about it anymore. Without taking for granted what I experienced”he delivers. “I am proud of this scar and the obstacles I overcame to get here. It shows my character. I was able to work to overcome a lot of things. That means I’m past all that. »

Did Jeff Green imagine himself playing this long, he who is 37 years old and was drafted in 2007?

“I would be lying if I said that,” he admits, before making comments similar to those made before the Finals against the Heat. “But I’ve always worked to be in this position. After my operation in 2012, I no longer looked ahead. I wanted to stay in the moment, in the present. Looking back, I’m happy with the way things turned out. I wouldn’t change all that for the world. »
