Harrison Barnes gives up $3.7 million to join Spurs

Sometimes, among the bonuses present in the players' contracts, we find a “trade kicker”. This is a transfer bonus that allows players to receive a sum between 5 and 15% of the remaining salary when they are traded. Harrison Barnes had one in his signed contract with the Kings.

In 2023, the winger extended for $54 million over three years, and his “trade kicker” was set at 10%. Thus, his arrival in San Antonio would be accompanied by a small bonus. The calculation is simple: $37 million still to be received, and therefore $3.7 million in bonuses.

But ultimately, to facilitate this three-team trade, which allowed DeMar DeRozan to arrive in California, the former Warriors winger decided to give up on this bonus of almost four million greenbacks. “Coming to San Antonio was an easy decision for me.”, assure Harrison Barnes, who notes that the “Trade kicker plays an important role” in transfers now with the new collective agreement.

The 2015 NBA champion is excited about playing in Texas, with the Spurs only winning 22 games last season. But the trio of Victor Wembanyama – Gregg Popovich – Chris Paul offers great prospects.

“It's an opportunity. Playing for this coach, for this group, it's exciting,” says the winger. “It takes time to build things in this league. To be a good team, you have to have the right formula, and over the years, I think the Spurs have been one of the toughest teams for me to play against. They're a top-tier franchise, across the board.”
