Grant Williams and the Celtics failed to find a compromise

He is one, with Matisse Thybulle or Cameron Johnson in particular, of the players in the 2019 Draft who did not extend this fall. As announced, Grant Williams failed to come to an agreement with the Celtics.

The strong winger had a figure in mind, which was around 14 or 15 million dollars a season, when the franchise was not determined to offer as much. Negotiations were therefore deadlocked.

“I was not moving on what I wanted. Neither do they, I think.”sums up the Boston player at The Athletic. “Both sides tried to negotiate to reach an agreement. There was no ill will, no frustration. We just couldn’t come to a conclusion. This does not mean that an agreement will not be found next year, or in the future. »

If Grant Williams did not accept a lower offer, like those of other interiors of his style (33 million over three years for PJ Tucker and Maxi Kleber, or 21.6 over two years for Larry Nance Jr), it is precisely for raise the rating of players like him.

“Everyone says money changes your life, it’s true and that’s good, but you never want to accept a bad contract. When you look at the league and the role I play in it in the players’ union, you have to think about its present but also its future. It wasn’t about money, it was about value, and not just for this season but for the next ones to come. It’s a matter of perspective: I want to make sure that I’m okay with my extension and that it doesn’t disrupt other players like me or the market. »

This episode now over, before possibly resuming later, the 2022 finalist can now focus solely on his season.

“I thank the Celtics for this opportunity. That’s why we want to stay here a long time. Afterwards, basically, I do my job, I do what I’m asked to do and it’s not going to have any impact on me. We’ll take care of that later. The goal is to win the title.” he recalls as well.
