It couldn’t have been easy but Tony Parker fired his brother TJ Parker on Friday after Asvel’s poor start to the season in the Euroleague. To replace him, TP aimed Gordon Herbertworld champion with Germany, and former coach of Paris Basket Racing and Elan Béarnais Pau-Orthez in Betclic Elite.
The Canadian technician was interested in the position, and according to the president of Asvel, he had even accepted its conditions, salary and duration of the collaboration. But as he is under contract with the German Federation, Herbert had asked permission to put on this 2nd cap.
“I discussed with the Federation the possibility of coaching ASVEL while remaining national coach. The DBB did not support this idea and I accept it. I would never do it without the agreement and support of the Federation” he explained in the columns of Kicker.
Sergio Scariolo as plan B?
Appointed in September 2021 at the head of the Mannschaft, Herbert wants to set an example in this three-year project which he accepted. “I made a three-year commitment. If the players have also made such a commitment for three years, I will stick to it without a doubt,” he continues.
As the Herbert track failed, Tony Parker will turn to his plan B. We mention the track of Sergio Scariolo, fired by Virtus Bologna a few weeks ago. Parker acknowledged, in the Team, that he had spoken with the Spain coach, but “Gordi” had his preference. Will Scariolo agree to be a simple plan B if Parker calls him back?
